You love your parents, but you probably don’t want to live with them fulltime. They probably feel the same way about you.
One or both of your parents may be somewhat independent, but the time for somebody to check on them more often is drawing near.
Are you going to find a place for them to live in a senior citizen retirement complex for a few years and figure out what to do after that? That’s a valid option, but it could quickly suck a savings account dry.

People in your situation are choosing tiny cabins as an on-site option for in-laws, outlaws, elderly friends and family. Even active seniors are buying tiny cabins, placing a few in a neat little row to live near their besties and nicknaming them granny cabins.
The tiny cabin lifestyle isn’t for everyone, but downsizing, simplifying and being close to family without being underfoot is a great option for everyone. Privacy rules the day — and help is a short walk away.
You could consider building an addition on your house, but the “financial concerns and the desire for more time and freedom” may have you join the tiny cabin movement, as noted in a recent post on www.thetinylife.com (What Is The Tiny House Movement? – The Tiny Life).
Our customers love the simplicity of living in a tiny cabin as well as the ability to be creative. Most of our customers do not live in their tiny cabin; it’s a hunting cabin, a weekend getaway or a spot for guests to enjoy. However, they increasingly are looking for a tiny cabin to use as a guest house or granny house.
If you want something a little bit larger than what you’ve seen online or elsewhere, we can help. If you want to build it yourself or have your favorite builder build your granny house, we can ship our custom wood products to you so you can make it look as rustic or unique as you like.
Keep in mind that tiny cabins are considered an “out building” no matter what you call it, so you should check with your local zoning office. Our tiny cabins usually wind up on a pad of limestone or cement. Even though that makes them easy to transport, it also puts them into an (unfounded) area of concern for some zoning officials.
We’ve discovered some planning/zoning experts don’t like the “portable” aspect because of issues they’ve had with portable buildings falling into disrepair and being abandoned — but don’t have concerns specifically about tiny cabins (see our related blog post). Our customers have successfully resolved the issue by requesting a variance.
So if you have someone in your life that needs their own space a little closer to you (and you want to keep your own space too), consider a granny cabin. They’re like assisted living — with family.
