How Does a WoodHaven Log Home Stand Up to Winter?

When you think of the “classic log cabin,” chances are you imagine it surrounded by a lush forest on a sunny day. You may associate them with summers up north, vacation homes, and the like. But what is life like in that log home during the winter? Does it hold up to the snow, or is it freezing in there?

If you were referring to the classical construction of the early log cabins, then yes it was quite cold. They could be drafty depending on how well they were insulated and sealed. Most of them were sealed with mud and dirt which wasn’t very effective. Luckily modern construction materials have replaced mud and today log homes can stand up to winters just like any other home!

WoodHaven Log Homes Include Insulation

There is a key difference between a true full log build and using log siding to create your log home. With full log builds, logs get stacked on top of each other to create your home structure. The process is difficult and requires heavy machinery. Once logs are stacked and caulked in, they’re set. There is no opportunity to place insulation between them.

This is not the case with a log siding home. These homes use modern home frames and walls, then simply install half log siding onto the walls instead of drywall. The end result still looks just like a log cabin wall! You really cannot tell the difference. By still using a modern frame, you still have the opportunity to place insulation into the wall. This plays a significant role in keeping your log home warm during the winter months. Traditional log walls can trap heat in, but never as effectively as insulation materials.

WoodHaven Log Homes Have Better Sealing Around Windows

Windows and doors are a significant source of where home heat escapes. In a full log build, properly sealing windows and doors can be a challenge, especially since the spaces for doors and windows have been cut away from multiple stacked logs. There are lots of little crevices that need sealing. This is less of a case with WoodHaven log siding. Conventional home frames are much better suited for installing windows and doors with a perfect fit, and then the log siding is installed around them and fitted with trim.
