Well, we took a tiny cabin across an international border. It was fun, a little challenging, and we learned a lot. Our customer is thrilled. That could be the entire story, but it’s not — not even close.
We’ve had jobs all over the country, but this is the first time one of our tiny cabins has gone international.
As with most adventures in life, the unexpected is sure to arise. Why else would “the best laid plans of mice and men” remain in use?
Taking a tiny cabin across the border between the United States and Canada might seem like no big deal, but the permits, paperwork and weighs created interesting challenges. Less than halfway to the border we had issues with brakes, and it took checking with four garages to find someone to help.
We buckled in for the ride up the learning curve and got it done — only to be met by more unforeseen circumstances upon arrival.
We love trees more than the average Joe, but sometimes they are in the way. It’s simply a reality on a planet shared by trees and humans creating amazing living spaces: a tree or few might fall. We managed to squeeze the tiny cabin between a tree and existing woodshed.
As much planning as had gone into planning this international tiny cabin delivery, making sure the path for placement was clear hadn’t made the cut. See what happens when you stretch your capacity? It’s cool; we’re all human. No only did we learn, we rose to the occasion as we always do.
We had to call in a backhoe to get the tiny cabin set. A little jockeying was involved. It’s officially perfectly level.
It was important for the placement of this tiny cabin to be perfect; the customer’s wife’s mom had sold her house and she needed to live near them — not with them. Having his mother-in-law close by, but with her own space for sleeping and her own kitchen was ideal for everyone.
The customer found us via display ads. He visited our website and paid a deposit after having a conversation with one of the members of our team. It was validation of our commitment to quality, trust and service to have a customer from Toronto, Canada give us the nod from eight hours away (by truck) after seeing our website, photos, and a conversation.
You may have seen the tiny cabin that has gone international while it was at the Novi Home Show a couple of years ago. It’s the one with 8” quarter-log hewn with walnut stain siding on the outside, 8” hewn white pine on the ceiling, and 6” pine on walls. It was decorated as cute as a button. It got a lot of attention.
You can think fondly of it now, all tucked in a special spot for some very special people.
